CHAPTER XVII

RATTY

Mr. Warry remarked one evening that there were ten little pigs born, and the news being of interest to Mrs. Warry, the two good people departed with a lantern, leaving Hester alone. Hester thought this moment would be the proper one for reading a letter that she had found at the post-office that afternoon from her mother.

Ridgeway Street,

Eveleigh.

Dearest Hester,—

The large brown saucepan with the long handle be broke. ’Tis the rat that did do it and Mr. Haysom.

I were thinking of Mr. Haysom and his teeth when something ugly ran under the kitchen table. the saucepan be broke. I said to Mrs. Dine the saucepan be broke and all Mrs. Dine did say were I’ve bought another house, Mrs. Dominy. now tell me dear do Mr. Earley talk right, for I do know what will make he talk right if he don’t—springs. Mind Hester when you see him coming down the country lane you stoop down low and pick a flower. He won’t say nothing then but the flower will do it or else the stooping. there are always flowers in the country Mr. Earley must love a flower. ’tis best you keep a servant when once you be a clergyman’s wife.

The wind be strong blowing in town. yesterday the wind blew my second best bonnet sideways when I were out shopping and I stayed for a moment by Mr. Pardy’s big window to tie it up and Mr. Haysom come along. ‘the children miss your daughter, Mrs. Dominy’ he said. Only he didn’t speak it very plain. ‘And Ratty,’ I think he did say Ratty, ‘threw a bad nut on Sunday across the pews, the nut hit Mrs. Pardy. the price of pork and cabbage be gone up, please mind the stooping for the flower when he do ask you to marry him don’t answer at first, you best only stoop and pick another flower. I be forced to use the old saucepan that you burnt Christmas, the lace curtain be tore in bedroom.
